This is a series celebrating the joy of reading with patrons, students, teachers, parents, and community members while they share their favorite readings— join us each day this week for something new!

March 7th

  • Special Guest Reader: Mara Iverson
    Book: “Neither” by Airlie Anderson

“Though I now live in Vermont, I grew up in Vandergrift and my mother still lives there. I used to participate in summer reading programs at Vandergrift Public Library when I was a kid in the late 90s. I recently cashed a savings bond that I received for winning a summer reading challenge in 1999. Cashing the bond gave me a moment to reflect on my memories of the library. I have so many good ones. Thank you for all you do and have done for folks of all ages past, present, and future”.

  • Special Guest Reader: David English

“I read because it gives me power, pleasure, and knowledge and pushes my mind to grow. Reading is healthy for my brain. Free public Libraries create access to knowledge, information, and academic opportunity that give a person the tools to achieve their dreams and set themselves free “.

Book: Hooray for Books by Brian Won

David chose this book because it encourages and celebrates reading books. The last time he read it with his afterschool program kids they all cheered along as they read aloud, “Hooray For Books!”.

March 6th

  • Special Guest Reader: Melanie Garee / Valley Points YMCA
Book: “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” By Mo Willems

“I read today because reading is a big part of my life and that’s because I had wonderful people to read to me when I was young. When I was growing up, I used to love going to the Vandergrift Library. There is just something wonderful about walking into a library, smelling the unique scent of the books and enjoying the peace and quiet of the environment. My parents were both teachers and loved to check books out of the library and spend time at home, especially before bed, snuggled up reading together. I still read every night before I fall asleep. It helps me clear my head and relax into a world of fiction.”

I chose this book because it is one of my favorite children’s book and author. I have so much fun reading Mo Willem books with my two boys.
